The Latest Updates on Henry County Road Projects May 2025

Over two billion dollars are budgeted for transportation projects in Henry County by 2030. This represents a combination of federal, state and local dollars being invested into the county. Here are the latest updates on Henry County road projects as of May 2025.

These updates come from the Henry County Transportation Advisory Group quarterly meeting. The committee held its quarterly meeting on Monday, May 5, 2025.

Henry County Road Projects May 2025

Major Road Projects & Road Widening Projects

About 35 major road projects are planned in Henry County. This represents numerous road widening projects, an expansion of Interstate 75, and new roads. Below is more information about each project categorized by their primary funding source.

SPLOST V

  • Flippen Road extension, between Jonesboro Road at North Mt. Carmel Road, Dutchtown Schools and Stratford Circle – Construction bid awarded in April 2024. Construction about 37% complete. Estimated completion is January 2026.
  • McDonough Parkway at SR 20 – county’s portion is substantially complete; awaiting tie-in with Georgia DOT’s State Route 20 widening project before the new road can open.

T-SPLOST

  1. State Route 81 widening, phase I, between Postmaster Drive and Bethany Road – Right of way acquisition is about 99% complete. Estimated construction let date is in fall 2025.
  2. Bill Gardner Parkway widening, between I-75 and state route 155 – Right of way acquisition is about 50% complete.
  3. Jonesboro Road widening, between Mill Road and North Mt. Carmel Road – Right of way acquisition is about 53% complete..
  4. Mill Road widening, between Jonesboro Road and Peachtree Peddler’s Flea Market – Right of way acquisition is about 97% complete.
  5. McDonough Parkway, north segment, between state route 42 and state route 155 – Construction bid awarded in April 2024. Construction started in July 2024; construction is 55% complete. Traffic shift for Turner Church Road completed on May 8, 2025. Estimated completion date is January 2026.
  6. Rock Quarry Road widening, between SR 138 and Eagles Landing Parkway – Construction bids received in April 2025; awaiting board approval to begin construction.
  7. Fairview Road widening, between Hearn Road and SR 155 – Right of way acquisition is about 42% complete.

SPLOST VI

Henry County voters approved SPLOST VI in November 2024. Collections began on April 1, 2025. Since January, the county has accepted design proposals and awarded design contracts for several projects.

There are 17 major road projects on the county’s SPLOST VI list. They are grouped below by their geographic area.

Locust Grove & Hampton

  1. State Route 42 widening (south), SR 155 to Bill Gardner Parkway – design letting TBA.
  2. Hampton-Locust Grove Road widening, SR 20 to SR 155 – design proposals received in April 2025.

Ola & Union Grove

  1. State Route 81 widening, Phase II, Bethany Road to Keys Ferry – design contract awarded in March 2025.
  2. Airline Road extension, Rodgers Road to SR 81 – right of way acquisition starting soon.
  3. East Lake Road widening, SR 155 to Airline Road – design proposals due May 16.
  4. Keys Ferry Road extension, SR 81 to North Ola Road – design proposals received in March 2025.
  5. Snapping Shoals Road improvements, North Ola Road to River Road – design in progress.

Central Henry

  1. McDonough Parkway widening, SR 20 to Jonesboro Road – design proposals received in April 2025.
  2. Jonesboro Road widening (east), Interstate 75 to McDonough Pkwy – design letting TBA.
  3. Oak Grove Road widening, Jodeco Road to Jonesboro Road – design contract awarded on May 6, 2025.
  4. Willow Lane widening, Jonesboro Road to Bridges Road – design contract awarded in April 2025.
  5. Bridges Road, Mt. Carmel Road to Willow Lane – design letting TBA.
  6. Jonesboro Road widening (west), Phase II, N. Mt. Carmel Road to Clayton County line – design contract awarded on May 6, 2025.
  7. Jodeco Road widening (west), I-75 to Hudson Bridge Road – design contract awarded on May 6, 2025.
  8. Patrick Henry Parkway widening, Eagles Landing Pkwy to Jodeco Road – design proposals due on May 30.

North Henry

  1. Fairview Road widening, Home Depot to Hearn Road – right of way acquisition started in April 2025.
  2. East Atlanta Road widening, Fairview Road to Rex Road – design contract awarded on May 6, 2025.

City Projects

  • State Route 42 widening, between Bill Gardner Parkway and Marketplace Blvd – design in progress; joint project between Locust Grove and Georgia DOT.
  • State Route 42 study, between Marketplace Blvd and MLK Jr. Blvd – study in progress. Project will determine the preferred locations for two (2) grade-separated railroad crossings within Locust Grove; joint project between Locust Grove and GDOT.

Georgia DOT Projects

Projects Under Construction Now or Coming Soon

  • State Route 20 / 81 widening, between I-75 and Phillips Drive – Construction began in March 2023; estimated completion date TBA.
  • State Route 42 widening, between I-675 and SR 138 – Construction began in October 2023; estimated completion date is in August 2027.
  • Western Parallel Connector, a new four-lane road between Hudson Bridge, Jodeco and Jonesboro Roads – construction award approved in July 2024; estimated completion date is in November 2026.
  • SR 81 at New Morn Drive – construction bid approved in September 2024. Notice to proceed issued on October 2, 2024; estimated completion date is August 2026.
  • State Route 20 resurfacing, between I-75 and Lower Woolsey Road – construction bid approved in October 2024; estimated completion date is August 2025.
  • SR 20 at McGarity Road & Lawrenceville Street – project will construct dual roundabouts at the two intersections; estimated construction bid date is in July 2025.

Pre-Construction Projects

  • State Route 42 widening, between SR 138 and Downtown McDonough – the project is in design. Right of way acquisition is scheduled for 2027–28 and construction is scheduled to start in 2030.
  • State Route 155 widening, between I-75 and SR 42 – the project is in design. The project is in right of way and construction is scheduled to start in late 2027.
  • SR 155 widening, between I-75 and Hampton-Locust Grove Road – concept development is in progress. Georgia DOT expects the concept report submission will be in the 3rd quarter of 2025. Right of way funding is in FY 2028, and construction is budgeted in 2030.
  • SR 42 Bridge Replacement over Norfolk Southern Railroad, near Harris Drive – Georgia DOT is now accepting design-build proposals. General contractor to be announced in October 2025. Construction expects to start in 2026.
  • I-75 Commercial Vehicle Lanes, between I-475 / Macon and SR 155 / McDonough – construction TBD.
  • I-75 Express Lanes Expansion, between I-675 and SR 155 – project announced in July 2024; design work in progress.
  • New I-75 Exit at Bethlehem Road – design plans presented in April 2023. Georgia DOT is now accepting design-build proposals. General contractor to be announced in October 2025. Construction expects to start in 2026.

Other County Projects

Road Resurfacing

  • 2023 & 2024 LMIG / 2024 Contract 1 – cost: $6.7 million; status: 99% complete.
  • County-funded Resurfacing / 2024 Contract 2 – cost: $5.1 million; status: complete.
  • Major Roads / 2025 Contract 1 – six roads or 21 miles. Cost: $15.9 million; status: construction bid awarded on May 6, 2025.
  • Districts 1 and 5 / 2025 Contract 2 – 79 roads or 33 miles. Cost: TBD; status: bids close May 14.
  • Districts 2, 3 and 4 / 2025 Contract 3 – 103 roads or 31 miles. Cost: TBD; status: bids close May 21.
  • Local Roads Grant / 2025 Contract 4 – BOC approval of roads list scheduled for May 28.

Intersections

  • East Lake at Airline Roadtraffic signal approved in November 2024; installation in progress.
  • Jodeco Road at Oak Grove Road – traffic signal approved in November 2024; installation complete pending Georgia Power for utility connection.
  • Airline Road at McGarity Road – right of way acquisition is 95% complete.
  • Flippen Road at McCullough Road – design proposals received in April 2025; no proposals received. Second Request for Proposals TBA.
  • Mt. Carmel Road at North Mt. Carmel Road – design proposals received in April 2025; BOC to consider awarding design contract on May 28.
  • Henry Parkway at Henry Parkway Connector – new roundabout; construction bids received on May 7.
  • Peeksville Road at Old Jackson Road – design proposals received in April 2025.
  • Racetrack Road at Travis Drive – design proposals received in April 2025.

Dirt Roads

  • Burg Road, from Peeksville Road to the Butts County line – construction bid approved in January 2025; notice to proceed issued on April 8.
  • Dutchtown Road, from Mt. Carmel Road to Jonesboro Road – construction bid approved in January 2025; notice to proceed issued on April 14.
  • Knight Drive – construction is 37% complete; estimated completion is in August 2025.
  • Ellistown Road, from Peeksville Road to Moccasin Gap Road – design in progress.
  • Sandy Ridge Road, from Keys Ferry Road to Stallsworth Road – design in progress.

Miscellaneous Projects

  • Fairview Road sidewalks, from Anvil Block Road to DeKalb County line – construction started in January 2025. Construction is 12% complete; estimated completion date is in November 2025.
  • Dailey Mill Road over Walnut Creek, bridge replacement – design proposals due June 2.
