Henry County voters approved SPLOST V in November 2019. Tax collections started in April 2020. Since then, local sales tax collections surpassed expectations in 2020. SPLOST V collections recently passed $50 million dollars.
During the first thirteen months of collections, merchants collected $50,478,076.54. Because of how Georgia disburses collections, the most recent figures always trail one month. Henry County received tax receipts at the end of May from April collections.
Local cities will now begin to see SPLOST V collections. The county designated the first twenty percent of collections, or $40.8 million, for tier II projects. The county and cities will split the remaining 80% based on population.
Tier II Projects
The county’s SPLOST V program is headlined by the forthcoming aquatic center. The project also headlines the tier II projects. Earlier this year, commissioners selected to locate the project off Jodeco Road. Since then, county staff have worked with the city of Stockbridge and property owner to advance the project.
Henry County is now accepting proposals for architectural design services. The selected firm will design both the indoor aquatic center and outdoor water park. Interested firms have until July 13 to submit their proposal. Afterwards, county staff will review the submissions before recommending a firm to receive the contract. Construction will follow design work.
The project has a $22 million dollar budget. Expenses to date total $66,409.
Public Safety Projects
Elsewhere in Henry County, construction is concurrently underway in Fairview. The new public safety campus consists of a police precinct and rebuilt fire station 6. J.R. Bowman Construction Company, Inc. of McDonough is the contractor.
Other public safety projects include three more police precincts, a rebuild of fire station 5 in Hampton, and two new fire stations. The new stations 17 and 18 will be in the Ola and Flippen areas. At this time, these projects have not started.
District Projects
Each commission district received a budget of $19.6 million for projects. The projects include both road work and capital projects.
In district one, all intersections and dirt road paving projects are under design. Examples include paving Burg Road and Peeksville Road. They also include Bill Gardner Pkwy at Lester Mill Road. In addition, the county awarded construction to re-align South Ola Road. This project will build a new South Ola Road to better connect with SR 81 and North Ola Road.
Last month, the board approved the bid for a new signal. The red light is at state route 155 and Greenwood Industrial. Also in district II, the county hired Southern A&E, LLC to design a new recreation center. The venue will be at North Mt Carmel Park. Finally, design is underway for the Flippen Road extension and paving Dutchtown Road.
Construction will be starting soon at state route 20 and Turner Church Road. The project will build a new roundabout. District three has a plethora of projects under design, such as Bridges Road at Willow Lane. Together with district four, design work is in progress on East Lake Road improvements. The design also includes East Lake Road at Airline Road. The largest project in district IV — widening Rock Quarry Road — is buying right of way.
Finally, in district V, the widening of West Village Parkway is under construction. Other projects include new ball fields on Panola Road and widening Fairview Road.
