Henry County approved the construction bid for an upcoming sidewalk project in Fairview. The project will cost the county $5.9 million, almost double the original price tag. It covers 1.6 miles of Fairview Road.
Fairview Road Sidewalks
Henry County accepted construction bids in August 2024 for the Fairview Road sidewalks. The project will add an 8’ wide shared-use path on both sides of the road. It extends between Village Park and the DeKalb County line. This is a length of 1.6 miles, or 3.2 miles of new path.
The county received six bids for the project. The low bid was by Sol Construction, LLC of Atlanta. Their bid was $4,895,231.50. They will have 300 days to complete the project once work begins.
The original project budget was $3.25 million. The board of commissioners in January 2021 authorized a $3 million dollar transfer from the county’s fund balance to the project. From this amount, about $2.6 million was remaining.
To facilitate the additional project costs, county staff recommended a budget amendment of $3,318,826.68. The amendment is from SPLOST V tax collections. The board approved this amendment at their Tuesday, September 18, meeting. They also approved the construction contract.
“That community is super excited for this to take place; it is long overdue,” shared District 2 Commissioner Neat Robinson. Fairview Road is located in her district. “We are trying to make this so golf carts can move around the community. There are great things coming to the area.”
Board members unanimously approved the project by a 5-0 vote. Commissioner Anglyn was absent from Tuesday’s meeting.
Long-Term Plan
Presently, there is a sidewalk on Fairview Road between Anvil Block Road and Panola Road. The county built this during past road widening projects. Future widening projects on Fairview Road will continue the sidewalk further east.
There are two upcoming projects; both are presently buying right of way. They extend from Panola Road to Hearn Road, and from Hearn Road to SR 155.
In addition, the future path will connect with the Panola Mountain Greenway Trail. When both projects are complete, the pedestrian path will extend from Anvil Block Road to Panola Mountain State Park.
