In today’s Henry Minutes, I cover the bid award for the South Ola Road re-alignment, county commissioners approved changes to public comment at board meetings and GDOT accepted bids on a new roundabout. Henry Minutes is a collection of news from around Henry County.

South Ola Road re-alignment

County commissioners met on Tuesday, March 16. The board approved the construction contract to re-align South Ola Road. The South Ola Road re-alignment will build a new roadway to better connect South Ola and North Ola roads. The new roadway will tie into the existing traffic signal at SR 81 and North Ola. When complete, motorists will have safer access to and from South Ola Road.

The re-alignment is a SPLOST V district I project. Henry County awarded construction to Pittman Construction Company of Conyers, GA in the amount of $1,767,048.43

The contractor has 240 calendar days to complete the project. The days start when Henry County issues the notice to proceed.

The BOC was scheduled to consider two nearby projects, but Chair Harrell removed them from the agenda. The items included renovations to the concession stand at North Ola Park, and a design contract for sidewalks on North Ola Road. Both projects are in district III, presently vacant after Commissioner Barham’s passing.

Public Comment

I mentioned in the March 12 Henry Minutes the BOC was considering changes to public comment at meetings. During the board meeting on Tuesday night, members voted 4-1 to adopt the changes. Commissioner Johnny Wilson was the lone vote in opposition.

Now, residents will be allotted three minutes per speaker. Previously, the time limit was five minutes. Most important, speakers can only speak on topics appearing on the current or immediate past board agenda. Before, speakers could address any county-related item.

Finally, the changes pushed up the deadline to sign-up to speak. Residents must email the county clerk before 12 noon on the day before a board meeting to sign-up. The county clerk’s email address is sbraun [at] co.henry.ga.us

SR 155 at Panola Road

Georgia DOT recently closed bids for a new roundabout in north Henry County. The project is located at SR 155 and Panola Road.

Seven contractors submitted bids for construction. The low bid was submitted by Knight & Associates, Inc. in the amount of $2,922,241.40. GDOT generally posts the award announcement two to three weeks after bids close.
