Henry County Schools approved a construction bid for the new Birch Creek Elementary. Board approval occurred during the August 2022 meeting.

Birch Creek Elementary will be the district’s first new elementary school in more than a decade. The school will be off Willow Lane in McDonough.

Birch Creek Elementary

Construction on the new school will start this November and conclude by May 2024. MEJA Construction of Peachtree City, GA was the lowest bidder at $34.8 million dollars. MEJA Construction has done previous work for Henry County Schools, to include both Hampton and McDonough High Schools.

When the new school opens in August 2024, its attendance zone will draw from both Oakland and Wesley Lakes Elementary. Boundaries for the new school’s attendance are not yet available. The district will approve those plans closer to the school’s opening.

Education SPLOST VI, approved by voters in 2021, is paying for the project. In addition to Birch Creek, E-SPLOST VI has several other classroom capacity projects.

Dutchtown Additions

Construction continues on the Dutchtown High School classroom addition. Presently, the steel framing and metal roof decking are complete. Contractors are beginning to shift inside for interior work. The project — to add sixteen new classrooms — remains on track for a February 2023 completion.

In addition, the school board has upcoming classroom additions at both Dutchtown Middle and Ola Middle. The district recently received state funds to assist with a portion of project costs. During the August meeting, the school board accepted state funds in the amount of $1,223,766. These funds contribute to the overall cost of both projects.

The classroom additions have project start dates during fiscal year 2024. Visit here for a complete look at education SPLOST VI capacity projects.
