Henry County is now advertising construction bids for a new traffic signal at Jodeco Road and Oak Grove Road. Construction bids close in mid-September. The intersection improvement has been requested by residents for many years.
Jodeco Road at Oak Grove Signal
Henry County began advertising construction bids on Tuesday, August 27, for the new traffic signal. Interested contractors have until Wednesday, September 18, to submit their bids. The board of commissioners may consider approving a contract award as soon as October.
After the contract award and work starts, the contractor will have sixty days to finish it. If the board approves a contract in October, then the new signal could be active before the end of the year. Otherwise, expect it in early 2025.
The temporary signal should improve traffic flow. The county considers the signal to be temporary because the project will not build turn lanes onto the existing intersection. Henry County has installed temporary signals at East Lake and Elliott, as well as Bill Gardner Pkwy at Lester Mill Road. In addition, concurrent to this bid, the county is accepting bids for a new signal at East Lake and Airline. In each of these examples, there are future plans for a road widening project. The subsequent road widening will make more substantial improvements to the intersection.
SPLOST IV & SPLOST VI
Henry County residents have asked about Jodeco Road at Oak Grove Road improvements for many years. The county’s SPLOST IV program built a northbound right-turn lane. That project finished in early 2018, based on historic Google Streetview imagery. About the same time, in January 2019, the county opened the Campground Road extension. Those were the last road improvements within the immediate area.
In August 2023, Henry County hired Croy Engineering from Marietta to design an intersection improvement. The contract was noteworthy for being the first use of transportation impact fees within the county. Henry County had implemented transportation impact fees for the first time in February 2023. The county collects impact fees from new development.
During the SPLOST VI committee meetings in spring 2024, Henry County staff indicated they would be installing a temporary signal at Jodeco and Oak Grove. About the same time, the county submitted Oak Grove Road widening on its 2024 application for federal funding. Specifically, the county asked for $1.6 million to begin preliminary engineering. Henry County should learn this fall whether it receives the funding. Finally, the county added the widening of Oak Grove Road on its SPLOST VI project list.
The county’s upcoming SPLOST VI referendum has design & right of way funding for the Oak Grove Road widening. The widening project extends between Jonesboro Road and Jodeco Road. Voters will consider SPLOST VI on the November ballot. Construction funding would then follow at a later date.
