Henry County SPLOST sales tax collections surpassed $57 million dollars during 2022. The county’s transportation SPLOST program collected another $40 million during its first nine months.
Henry County SPLOST and transportation SPLOST each represent a one percent local sales tax within the county. The funds pay for capital projects, such as new parks and road improvements.
Sales Tax Collections 2022
The SPLOST program stands for special purpose local option sales tax. Henry County voters last approved it in November 2019. The county is presently in its fifth iteration of SPLOST.
Collections for SPLOST V began in April 2020. During the 2022 calendar year, the county collected $57.5 million. From this, Henry County receives about $40.3 million. The cities split the remainder.
One year ago, the SPLOST V program collected $52.2 million. This represents a 10.2% increase year-to-year. Through the end of 2022, the program has collected $144.3 million. Back in 2019, the county estimated the program could collect $204 million. If collections continue at their current growth rate, then this estimate will be met by the end of the year. Should that happen, then the county will need to consider a renewal referendum for SPLOST VI.
During the past year, the county completed the rebuild of fire station 6 in Fairview. The location has a new police precinct and park also paid for by SPLOST V. Henry County opened the new roundabout at state route 20 and Turner Church Road over the summer. Another SPLOST project, the South Ola Road re-alignment, is set to open any day awaiting good weather. Finally, the county awarded a construction bid in December for Racetrack Road at Iris Lake. The new roundabout is a joint SPLOST project with McDonough.
Updates about various SPLOST projects are available on the county website.
T-SPLOST Collections
Henry County’s inaugural transportation SPLOST began collections in April 2022. Because of this, it only saw nine months of collections. T-SPLOST collected $40.9 million during the year.
Henry County receives $27.5 million out of that, or about 70%. The county and four cities agreed to divide T-SPLOST collections based on population. Over five years, the county estimated the program could collect $245 million.
So far, the county has several T-SPLOST projects under design. They include widening Bill Gardner Parkway, Jonesboro Road, Mill Road and Fairview Road. In addition, widening state route 81 should begin buying right of way within the next few months. Finally, widening Rock Quarry Road is scheduled to accept construction bids this summer.
