State DOT planning Sloan Street stop sign, other improvements

Georgia DOT wants motorists to know about an upcoming traffic pattern change in downtown McDonough. The state will be installing a new three-way stop at state route 42 / Macon Street and Sloan Street. The change goes into effect starting on Wednesday, August 25.

SR 42 at Sloan Street

The intersection of Macon Street and Sloan Street is near KirbyG’s and Axe Country. The state installed a temporary stop sign at the location in October 2020. The test period lasted about one week. Now, the three-way stop will become permanent.

In addition to road signage, a new stop sign comes with road markings and new stop bars. The state is also planning to install “don’t block the box” markings. The install is subject to weather conditions on Wednesday morning.

The adjacent intersection, Griffin Street at Sloan Street, has been a three-way stop since October 2017. GDOT will also be incorporating new “don’t block the box” markings at this location.

Downtown McDonough

Georgia DOT will be making other updates around the McDonough Square. Since state routes connect through the square, GDOT is responsible for their maintenance. This includes the crosswalks and road signs.

The state plans to re-stripe all crosswalks downtown. They will also be replacing the crosswalk boxes. Several of the boxes are broken or damaged from age and auto collisions.

Thank you to McDonough councilman Craig Elrod for sharing the above info online.

2021 LMIG Program

The McDonough city council recently approved their 2021 resurfacing bid. The council awarded the contract during their August 16 meeting.

Onsite Paving, Sealcoating & Maintenance, Inc. of McDonough, GA submitted the low bid. Their bid equaled $686,873.00. The city rejected two other incomplete bids.

The LMIG program is partially funding the work — an annual grant from the state to local counties and cities. This year, McDonough received $238,661.24 in LMIG funds. The city will use SPLOST IV funds for the remaining cost. This amounts to $448,211.76.

The work covers 3.15 miles of road resurfacing. They include the following:

  • Carver Road from Phillips Drive to Payne Drive
  • Regal Drive from Bugle Way to Kingston Lane
  • Ward Street between Holly Smith Drive and George W Lemon Street
  • Ambassador Drive between Foxchase Lane and Monarch Drive
  • Industrial Parkway from state route 20 to Avalon Parkway
  • Monarch Drive from Bugle Way to the cul-de-sac
  • Old Industrial Blvd between state route 20 and Industrial Blvd
  • Lyman Stringer Blvd between Simpson Street and state route 42
  • Marlin Drive from Labonte Pkwy to the end

Henry County is concurrently resurfacing eighty miles of roads. E.R. Snell Contractor, Inc. is performing the work for the county.
