The Georgia DOT is accepting construction bids to resurface state route 20. The project is part of the state’s September 2024 letting.

The resurfacing will be from Lower Woolsey Road in Hampton to Industrial Blvd in McDonough. The state should announce a contract award in October.

State Route 20 Resurfacing 2024

State Route 20 between Hampton and I-75 was widened to four lanes in 2002–2005. Based on the state’s website, there are no records of it being resurfaced since then. If so, then the upcoming resurfacing will replace the current asphalt of about twenty years old.

Georgia DOT is accepting construction bids through Friday, September 20. The state typically posts about two weeks later an award announcement. If the state awards the contract in October, then work could start before the end of the year. However, it is likely most of the road work will occur next spring to avoid the winter. Low temperatures during the cold months are problematic for resurfacing work.

The state’s estimated cost for the project is $10 million.

Georgia 20 Widening

To the east of I-75, a separate project to widen Georgia 20 is under construction. The widening is from I-75 to Phillips Drive. It has an estimated completion date in summer 2025.

Upcoming Georgia DOT Projects

In August, the state accepted construction bids for a new roundabout at state route 81 and New Morn Drive. The low bid was $3.2 million. Another project of interest in nearby Butts County — a roundabout at SR 16 and England Chapel — was also in the August letting. It had a low bid of $3.6 million. The state should announce in September whether they approve build contracts.

Coming up before yearend, the state plans to bid out SR 20 at McGarity & Lawrenceville in November. This project will construct dual roundabouts. Work would then begin next year.

Finally, widening Rock Quarry Road is in the January 2025 letting. It was previously planned for September 2024; however, a date change of a few months is not uncommon on state projects. This depends on whether final approvals, such as right of way or environmental, are complete.
