Improvements are coming soon at McBrayer Park in Hampton. The council approved the bid contract at their January 14 meeting.
The project will resurface the basketball court as well as add a second court. It will also resurface the tennis and pickleball courts.
McBrayer Park Improvements
The McBrayer Park improvements include the following:
- resurfacing of one basketball court,
- construction and surfacing of one new basketball court,
- resurfacing of existing pickleball and tennis courts, and
- utility connections for one restroom facility (future).
In addition, Hampton City Manager Alex Cohilas indicated they will update the pickleball courts to orient north to south. He expressed residents shared with him the current courts face the wrong direction, east to west, meaning one player has to play into the sun.
Hampton accepted construction bids in December 2024. They received five bids. P.E. Structures & Associates, LLC of Roswell, GA submitted the low bid valued at $1,169,623. They will have 180 days, once work begins, to complete it.
SPLOST V funds are paying for the project. According to the city, the original project budget was $750,000. They will use a portion of their SPLOST V overage to cover the difference. The program has collected more than its original estimate; the collections are then split between Henry County and each city.
The city considers these improvements to be phase 1. Future improvements will include the new restroom building, to be near the basketball court, and updates to the splash pad. Hampton is also interested in partnering with Henry County Schools to add a new turf multi-purpose field. A timeline for those updates is not immediately available, subject to available funding.
In 2021, the city updated the skate park at the request of local youth. McBrayer Park also offers a playground and picnic pavilions.
