Voters approved SPLOST V in November 2019. On the project list was dirt road paving Burg Road. The project is about 1.45 miles in length.

Henry County hired local engineering firm, Falcon Design, in October 2020 to design the roadway. Right of way acquisition occurred from late 2022 to fall 2024. Finally, the county accepted construction bids in November. They received 13 bids.

Backbone Infrastructure, LLC of Buford, GA submitted the lowest bid. Their bid was $5,039,636.00. The board of commissioners approved this bid at the January 7 meeting. The company will have 300 days, from the notice to proceed, to complete the project. Work should be complete this fall.

“This has been a long process,” shared District 1 Commissioner Johnny Wilson before motioning to approve the project. “We appreciate staff’s work to get to this point.” Burg Road is located in his district.

In addition to the construction bid, the board approved a SPLOST V budget amendment to pay for it. The board approved the use of $3.5 million in unallocated SPLOST V collections towards the project. The unallocated collections are from collections over and above the original 2019 estimate. This increases the project’s overall budget from $3.8 million to $7.3 million.

Finally, the board approved the purchase of stream credits. These credits cost $396 thousand. There’s a box culvert and stream crossing as part of the construction.
