In today’s Henry Minutes, I cover an annexation request in Hampton, a new Dollar General store proposed in Locust Grove and the start of early voting for district three. Henry Minutes is a collection of news from around Henry County.
US 19 / 41 at Minter Drive
General Holdings Unlimited, LLC of Monroe, GA recently submitted an application for annexation in Hampton. The request covers 134 +/- acres located at the northwest corner of US 19 / 41 and Minter Drive. The property is presently Brown’s Christmas Tree Farm.
In addition to seeking annexation into city limits, the request includes rezoning the property. The applicant is seeking to rezone for a mixed use development. They propose the following uses:
- single-family detached homes,
- townhomes,
- apartments, and
- commercial / retail space.
More info, such as the number of units, is not yet available. The city council will hold a public hearing on the request during an upcoming meeting. The council next meets on Tuesday, June 8, at the Hampton train depot. The public hearing starts at 6 pm followed by the regular council meeting at 6:30 pm.
Hampton generally votes on the first reading of the request on the same night as the public hearing. The council considers the second reading one month later. If they approve the request, then city limits will expand further south to Minter Drive.
The request is concurrent to the city because of a 2019 annexation. A portion of the annexed area was rezoned earlier this year. The 546-acre development plans to build warehouse space, apartments and retail.
Dollar General
Dollar General is planning to construct a new store in Locust Grove. They have filed architectural plans for the northwest corner of Tanger Blvd and LG-Griffin Road. The property is across the street from the BP gas station.
City staff presented the plans to the city council last week. Because the property is already zoned for commercial use, the council is only approving the building elevations. They will consider plan approval at their next meeting on Monday, June 7.
Henry County and Stockbridge have adopted ordinances to limit new small-box discount store construction. Locust Grove does not presently have such an ordinance.
In other Locust Grove news, building plans for both Chick-fil-A and Waffle House are under review by city staff. The new restaurants plan to build on the west side of I-75 near La Quinta Inn.

Monday, May 24, was the first day of early voting. On the ballot is district three commissioner following the passing of Gary Barham. Only residents of district three — representing parts of McDonough, Ola and Union Grove — can vote.
