The Henry County Board of Commissioners approved two design contracts for dirt road paving projects in commission district I on Wednesday, November 4. The projects are funded through the county’s SPLOST V program.

Nearly all commission district I projects in SPLOST V requiring design contracts have been awarded. The one exception, phase II of widening state route 81, is awaiting a call for projects to apply for federal transportation funds before moving forward.

Ellistown Road

The design contract for Ellistown Road was awarded to Croy Engineering, LLC of Marietta, GA for $109,517. The project extends between Peeksville Road and Moccasin Gap Road.

The total project budget in SPLOST V is $175,000 covering design only. Additional funding for right of way acquisition and construction will be budgeted at a later date, most likely in SPLOST VI.

Sandy Ridge Road

Falcon Design Consultants, LLC of Stockbridge, GA will complete design services for Sandy Ridge Road at a cost of $94,430. The project starts at Keys Ferry Road and ends at Stallsworth Road.

Total project budget is $110,000. Like the project above, funds cover design only with additional funding required at a later date.

District I Projects

Construction on paving Peeksville Road between New Hope Road and the reservoir is under construction with an estimated completion date of late summer 2021. A second phase of dirt road paving, between the reservoir and Old Jackson Road, is awaiting final design plans before moving into right of way acquisition. $3,587,676 is budgeted in SPLOST V to fund right of way acquisition and construction for the second project.

The extension and re-alignment of South Ola Road was previously designed through Henry County DOT funds before being budgeted in SPLOST V. The project will relocate South Ola Road to connect with the existing intersection of state route 81 and North Ola Road. Right of way acquisition is planned to start soon with $2,683,528 budgeted for the project.

If Henry County enters into a construction contract for the South Ola Road extension by April 2021, the developer of the Shoppes at Ola Crossroads is conditioned through zoning to contribute $20,000 towards the construction cost.

In October, design contracts were awarded for intersection improvements at two locations — Bill Gardner Parkway at Lester Mill Road and Racetrack Road at Iris Lake Road. A design contract was also awarded for the dirt road paving of Burg Road.

Finally, the southwest segment of McDonough Parkway is complete and will be connected to state route 20 / 81 with a new multilane roundabout in upcoming years. The roundabout is part of a larger state-funded widening project scheduled to let for construction in fall 2021.
