The McDonough city council rejected a proposed gas station on Nail Road west of I-75. The applicant sought rezoning at the intersection with state route 20 and Nail Road.
Nail Road Gas Station
Jones Petroleum of Jackson, GA sought rezoning from C-2 (general commercial) to C-3 (highway commercial). Their proposed use — a gas station and fast-food restaurant with drive-thru — requires C-3 zoning in McDonough. The property consists of 2.46 acres. It is at the northwest corner of SR 20 and Nail Road.
According to the applicant, the location is ideal because Nail Road provides access to both highways 20 and 81. There is also a left-turn lane present on highway 20 for traffic traveling towards the interstate. This would allow motorists from multiple directions to access the location. The applicant did not express which fast-food restaurant nor petroleum brand would locate on the site. Jones Petroleum partners with several brands.
The McDonough council considered the request during their March 18 meeting. The council voted 5-2 to deny the rezoning request. Council members Payton and Stewart voted against the motion.
Council members spoke in opposition to a new gas station before the vote. Councilwoman Thomas expressed she did not believe another gas station was necessary in the area. She added she would rather see an entertainment business locate on the property. The council similarly disapproved of a new fast-food option in the area.
The city’s planning commission had recommended approval of the request. The city staff likewise recommended approval. At this time, the property remains zoned C-2 (general commercial).
