Henry County has approved a contract to rebuild fire station 5 in Hampton. The new station will be at highway 20 and McDonough Street.
The station closed earlier this year due to safety concerns. The fire department temporarily relocated its personnel to a hanger at Atlanta Speedway Airport.
Rebuild Fire Station 5
The previous fire station was built in 1996. It was located off Elm Street in downtown Hampton. The county included funds to rebuild it in the SPLOST V program. Voters approved the program in November 2019.
The need to replace the station became pressing in April of this year. County officials closed the building at the time and relocated fire personnel citing safety concerns. The personnel moved to the aircraft hanger a few weeks later. In October, the board voted to accept a property donation for the new station. The station will be moving to highway 20 at McDonough Street.
To expedite the building of a new station — and allow fire personnel to return to their primary coverage area — the county will be using the same design as station 6. They also considered the award of a construction contract as an emergency purchase. The board approved hiring J.R. Bowman Construction Company of McDonough. The company provided a build cost of $4,219,182.24. Bowman Construction has experience constructing several fire stations within the county.
SPLOST V set aside $3 million dollars to rebuild fire station 5. To fund the difference, the board also approved a budget amendment worth $1.5 million. The funds will be from the district 2 police precinct project account.
Design and construction will take a little more than one year to complete.
