Henry County held a groundbreaking ceremony in March for Mickie D. Cochran Park renovations in Stockbridge. The project will be complete this fall.

SPLOST V funds are paying for the work. J.R. Bowman Construction of McDonough is the project contractor.

Mickie D. Cochran Park Renovations

Henry County hired J.R. Bowman to be the project contractor in June 2022. The design-build contract allowed J.R. Bowman to design the project and build it. They finalized the project design around the New Year. Construction began in February 2023.

Mickie D. Cochran Park is located at 301 Banks Road in Stockbridge. Before now, the park had not seen upgrades through the SPLOST program. For reference, Henry County voters approved its first SPLOST program in 1996.

The project consists of a complete renovation of the park. The park’s football field will receive a complete overhaul. This includes new sports field lighting, fencing, goal posts and scoreboard. The renovation will also include two new lighted and full-size basketball courts and a new playground. Finally, a new two-story concession stand and scorekeeper’s area will overlook the football field. Restrooms will be included inside.

District IV Commissioner Vivian Thomas thanked all parties involved with the project and said she is excited for the new park to take shape.

“I want to say thank you to Team Henry and everyone for everything you’ve done to get us to this point. To the community, this is for you. For better health and to make sure we increase your quality of life,” said Thomas.

The project cost is $3.6 million. The SPLOST V program, approved by voters in Nov. 2019, set aside $7.8 million for park upgrades in district IV. At the March board meeting, the commissioners approved an additional $74 thousand dollar expense. This is for the new sports field lighting.
