A mini soccer pitch is coming soon to McDonough and Henry County. The mini field will be complete this summer at Alexander Park on Georgia 42.
McDonough Mini Soccer Pitch
The Southern Crescent Soccer Foundation (SCSF) is installing the mini soccer pitch. It is being grant-funded by the Atlanta United Community Fund and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), the nation’s leading community development support organization. The city of McDonough has also agreed to contribute $75,000 to the project.
The mini soccer pitch will be at Alexander Park. It will replace the upper parking lot. In addition, the specific site was the historic site of a former municipal swimming pool. The pool was closed and filled in post-desegregation.
What is a mini soccer pitch? According to the US Soccer Federation, “mini-pitches are small, customizable, hard-court soccer spaces that are ideal for urban areas and other communities where finding a safe place to play can be difficult. Not only do mini-pitches provide quality playing surfaces for children and adults, they also transform the look and feel of neighborhoods.” Atlanta United, through its community fund, has a goal to install 100 mini pitches in Georgia.
“We have been extremely excited about this opportunity with Southern Crescent Soccer Foundation, Georgia Revolution FC, and all of the many partners who have joined to make this project a reality,” said McDonough Mayor Vincent in a city press release. “We look forward to working with the community to ensure that this space is not just a field, but a place where people come together, play, and grow. Working with an international sport like soccer is redemptive in nature, bringing people of all backgrounds together in a way that reflects the very best of our city.”
Elsewhere in the city, McDonough received a grant for an outdoor fitness court at Avalon Park. Construction on that project is also forthcoming this spring.
