Georgia DOT contractors opened the diverging diamond interchange on Monday morning, June 27. The DDI is Henry County’s first located at I-75 exit 218 / state route 20 in McDonough. Some finishing work remains, such as pouring the concrete islands and installing mast arms — the large metal poles that support traffic lights. Both are waiting on concrete availability so workers can complete the project.
As motorists become familiar with the new traffic pattern, some may begin to wonder what’s next for Henry County transportation. Here’s a look at three state road projects beginning soon.
SR 81 at Snapping Shoals Road
Earlier this month, Georgia DOT awarded a construction contract for state route 81 and Snapping Shoals Road. The project will replace the existing mini-roundabout with a full-size circle. The state installed the mini-roundabout a few years ago to reduce accident rates while concurrently working on design and right of way acquisition for the big project.
CW Matthews Contracting of Marietta, GA submitted the low bid valued at $3,167,655.76. The contract completion date is October 31, 2023.
Work could begin as early as August at the intersection following the notice to proceed issued by Georgia DOT.
SR 42 widening in Locust Grove
Also happening now is the advertising of construction bids to widen highway 42 in Locust Grove. The state is accepting construction bids through July 22. They could award a construction contract in early August.
The widening project will add one southbound lane between Bill Gardner Parkway and Peeksville Road. This new lane will allow greater traffic flow during the evening rush hour.
If the state awards a contract, then residents should see construction starting this fall.
SR 20 widening
Finally, GDOT has a second project upcoming near I-75 exit 218. The project will widen highway 20 to four travel lanes between I-75 and Phillips Drive.
At the time of publication, the project is presently on schedule to let for construction in September. If the project remains on the September construction bids, then we should see road work start before year end.
A signature element of the project includes a new dual-lane roundabout at state route 20 and McDonough Parkway. When complete, the roundabout will open up the McDonough bypass further south to the county office and highway 155. Existing segments connect highway 20, Jonesboro Road and highway 42.
