Henry County commissioners awarded two design contracts for future transportation improvements in commission district III. The board awarded the contracts during their meeting on Wednesday, January 6. The contracts were part of the consent agenda approved without discussion.
The SPLOST V program, approved by voters in November 2019, is funding both contracts. Each commission district received $19.6 million to budget towards district projects.
Airline Road extension
The Airline Road extension is a planned new roadway connecting Airline Road with the intersection of state route 81 and Old Jackson Road. When complete, Airline Road and Old Jackson Road will complete a continuous north-south route through the county. The route will improve local mobility for residents.
District III budgeted $300,000 for the road extension. The funds are sufficient for design services only. The project requires additional funding in the future for right of way acquisition and construction.
EXP US Services, Inc. of Atlanta, GA provided the low bid for design services. The contract was awarded in the amount of $248,340.
Snapping Shoals Road improvements
Snapping Shoals Road improvements will consider improving lane width, curve geometry, and similar roadway design features. Ola residents requested the improvements, especially the increased lane width, leading to its inclusion in SPLOST V. The project extends between North Ola Road and River Road.
Budgeted funds total $825,000. Croy Engineering, LLC of Marietta, GA submitted the low bid for design services, at a cost of $257,000.
In December, board members awarded a separate contract to design improvements at North Ola Road at Snapping Shoals Road. Falcon Design Consultants received the design contract. During the December meeting, the board also awarded design contracts for East Lake at Airline, SR 81 at Upchurch, and Airline at McGarity.
