On Tuesday, October 6, Henry County commissioners approved the purchase of the former Fred’s Pharmacy in McDonough. The building will be used for a new elections office.

The county will purchase the building and two-acre property for $1,725,000. The seller will credit the county $65,000 following the close of the sale, expected on October 26.

The 16,905 square foot building was constructed in 2016. The property is located at 1550 S. Zack Hinton Parkway south of Racetrack Road.

The new building features a roll up loading dock that will assist elections staff in loading and transporting the new voting machines. The machines and their multiple components are transported on rolling carts.

Following the close of the property, the county’s facilities department will complete the interior build-out of the building at an estimated cost of $300,000. This is expected to last four months. Elections staff will move into their new office in spring 2021.

The new building will not be used for the 2020 election. All voters should continue to go to 40 Atlanta Street off the McDonough Square for early voting or to turn-in their absentee ballot.

The purchase and renovations are funded through the county’s capital project financing and lease-purchase agreement for the judicial center. The original cost estimate for the project was $2.5 million.
