In the city’s first rezoning hearing since March, the McDonough city council gave its approval on July 20 for a new RaceTrac service station to be constructed along highway 155. The project will demolish two structures built in 1970 — the Days Inn motel and a vacant restaurant — to redevelop the property.

Construction is estimated to begin during the first quarter of 2021 and last ten to twelve months. The new store will offer an automobile fueling canopy, commercial vehicle pull-through fueling stations, and in a late addition to the layout, drive-thru service for food and beverages.

The location has roadway access from both highway 155 and Industrial Blvd. The site is designed to allow commercial vehicles to turn right off highway 155 into the subject property for fueling and exit via Industrial Blvd before making consecutive right-hand turns to return to highway 155 south and proceed towards the interstate.

The project will be RaceTrac petroleum’s third relatively-recent project in Henry County following locations on Jodeco Road and highway 20 / 81. The finished build will closely mirror the location on highway 20 / 81 in build quality and landscaping.

GDOT widening scheduled in FY 2026

As part of the development, RaceTrac will be donating twenty-six feet of right of way towards the future widening of state route 155. GDOT has $50 million dollars budgeted and is actively in the design phase to widen SR 155 from I-75 north to US 23 / SR 42.

Right of way acquisition for the project is scheduled to begin in FY 2023. Construction is budgeted in FY 2026.

Article updated in July 2022 to reflect the most current SR 155 widening project schedule.
