Georgia DOT has now made available $250 million dollars to local governments for road repairs. The funds were part of the Governor’s amended FY 2024 state budget.
Each county and city across the state can receive a portion of the funds. They are in addition to the regular grant dollars distributed annually.
FY 2024 Road Repairs Funds
Georgia DOT announced in mid-March they would begin accepting applications for the FY 2024 road repairs funds. The state is calling such funds under local road assistance (LRA). This is different from the standard LMIG dollars distributed annually. Because state lawmakers categorized the funds as local assistance, rather than LMIG, there is no requirement for a local match. Typically, counties and cities must provide a financial match to receive LMIG funds. This allows counties and cities to take immediate advantage of the funding without impacting local budgets.
Locally, Henry County and the four cities are each set to receive the following amounts:
- Henry County (unincorporated) – $3,123,525.11
- Hampton – $138,562.36
- Locust Grove – $163,364.56
- McDonough – $382,458.98
- Stockbridge – $373,698.20
The amounts are based on population and miles of road maintained. Counties and cities have until June 15, 2024, to apply for the funding.
Henry County Funding
Earlier this year, the county commissioners approved $3.75 million dollars for extra road work. The county can now combine the extra state funds with the extra local dollars. Altogether, this will provide about $6.8 million dollars for additional road work.
In March, the county approved its 2024 resurfacing contract. This contract, to resurface 14 miles of road, was at a cost of $6.7 million. The county can now advertise for bids a second contract similar in size. The county has not yet announced which roads will see work courtesy of the extra funding.
