A new self-storage business is looking to build at highway 81 and Lake Dow Road. The business would be behind the existing Chick-fil-A and Starbucks restaurants.
The applicant must first obtain a special use permit from the city council. McDonough is set to consider the request in March 2024. Update: the city council approved this request.
Lake Dow Self-Storage
Merganser Enterprises, Inc. of Smyrna, GA, has applied for a special use permit to construct a self-storage business. The property already has C-3 zoning (highway commercial).
The city of McDonough requires C-3 zoning and the special use permit for interior-access self-storage. The council adopted a code amendment in November 2023 to allow such use. The city code did not previously support indoor self-storage.
The new self-storage would be a four-story climate-control building. This includes three stories above ground as well as a basement. The building measures 108,800 square feet altogether. The exterior finish would be generally brick to resemble a Class ”A” office building.
The city council will learn more about the request during their workshop meeting on Thursday, March 7. There will be a public hearing about the request on Monday, March 18. The city will also consider approving the special use permit that night. Council meetings take place at city hall starting at 6 pm. They are open to the public.
Highway 81 Development
Across the street, new commercial development is under construction on highway 81. This is next to the current Zaxby’s restaurant. The property is being developed into several commercial uses. They include two fast-food restaurants, a tire store and oil change business, and retail space.
The two fast-food restaurants will reportedly be Bojangles and Whataburger. MHF News has not been able to independently confirm this information.
