The McDonough council has approved a code amendment to allow indoor self-storage. They also approved allowing brew pubs within the city.

The council approved the changes at their November 20 meeting.

Indoor Self-Storage in McDonough

Previously, the city of McDonough only allowed self-storage within industrial zoning districts. Now, applicants can apply for indoor self-storage within the C-3 zoning district. The buildings must be interior-access climate-controlled multistory buildings. They typically resemble an office building.

In addition, the applicant must apply for a special use permit. This requires the city council’s approval for each specific location. Henry County refers to this process as a conditional use permit.

C-3 zoning — referred to as highway commercial zoning — is typically found along major corridors. Examples would be Jonesboro Road, highways 20 and 81.

With the change, the city’s code is now similar to Henry County. The county likewise allows indoor self-storage within C-3 zoning.

Brew Pubs in McDonough

The council also approved allowing brew pubs. They can locate within C-1 zoning. By extension, they can also be in C-2 or C-3 zoning.

Brew pubs allow craft brewing for on-site sales. The city’s regulations allow vendors to have up to five barrels for production. A barrel is typically 31 gallons in size.

The request came about because local residents, Jonathan and Shelby Hatcher-Gosnell, are interested in opening a brew pub in downtown McDonough. Their company is Dueling Wands Brewing Company.
