Henry County is moving forward with plans to construct a new ambulance bay near downtown McDonough. The county hired a design firm at their October meeting.
The move comes about one year after the county first advertised proposals to build the facility. At the time, they closed the proposal with no bid award.
Design for McDonough Ambulance Bay
Henry County started work in 2022 looking to build a new ambulance bay in McDonough. The 5,000 square foot building will have two vehicle bays. It will have living quarters, a kitchen and sleeping bunks for four personnel.
The new McDonough Ambulance Bay will be located next to Heritage Senior Center. This is on Florence McGarity Blvd. The McDonough Library is also on this street. The road is off highway 81 west of Lake Dow Road.
Right now, a county ambulance responds to calls from McDonough Fire Station 51. This is next to city hall. When complete, the ambulance would move to the new ambulance bay. A quick response vehicle, typically a pick-up truck, could also be housed at the location.
Henry County hired Croft & Associates of Kennesaw, GA to design the new building. Design costs equal $293,150. If the county elects for the architect to provide weekly inspections during construction, then this cost would be an additional $109 thousand. The county’s capital improvement funds are paying for the project.
Project Cost & Timeline
The architect estimates the new ambulance bay will cost $4.25 million to build. County documents provide a three million dollar budget. The construction costs will be unknown until the design is complete and the county can accept bids.
A timeframe to complete design work was not immediately available. Construction is estimated to last about 10–12 months.
