The Stockbridge council approved resurfacing two major roads during their July meeting. Walt Stephens Road and Mt. Zion Parkway will both see resurfacing.

The streets became the city’s responsibility after the legislative annexation. Transportation SPLOST collections will pay for the road work.

Resurfacing Walt Stephens Road

The resurfacing work will complete 2.3 miles of Walt Stephens Road. This extends from Flippen Road to the Stockbridge city limits / Clayton County line. In addition, the contractor will resurface about 0.63 mils of Mt. Zion Parkway. This work is from SR 138 to the Clayton County line near CarMax and BrandsMart.

Since taking over road maintenance for the corridors in January, staff reported filling a number of potholes on each road. Stockbridge staff had filled 67 potholes on Walt Stephens Road and 45 potholes on Mt. Zion Parkway. This occurred over a six-month period.

To complete the work, the city council approved a change order with their 2023 resurfacing vendor. The council previously awarded this year’s resurfacing contract to East Coast Grading, Inc. of Madison, GA. The extra resurfacing work will cost $2.24 million.

Councilwoman LaKeisha Gantt, in whose district the roads are located, thanked city staff for locating the funds to improve them. She made the motion to approve the change order before the council unanimously approved it.

T-SPLOST Budget Amendment

In 2021, Stockbridge set aside $2.8 million in their T-SPLOST projects for the Reeves Creek trail extension. Because the city approved a new housing project last month, the developer plans to construct the trail extension. This made available the T-SPLOST funds to resurface streets.

Needing funds to resurface streets has been a hot topic in Stockbridge since the annexation passed. Earlier this year, the council asked Henry County for help to resurface roads. An update on that request was not shared. Some other streets the city is now responsible to maintain include East Atlanta and Valley Hill Road.
