The current multifamily moratorium in McDonough received its 3rd renewal in June. The city council first passed the moratorium in May 2022.

The moratorium applies to new rezoning requests for apartments. It also prohibits new construction permits for hotels.

Multifamily Moratorium 3rd Renewal

The city of McDonough continues to work on a zoning code update. Consulting firm The Collaborative Firm is assisting in that work. Meanwhile, the multifamily moratorium will remain in effect. The council approved its latest renewal at their June 1 meeting. It now extends until the zoning code update is complete. The moratorium would have otherwise expired later in the month.

The moratorium prevents new applications to rezone property for multifamily housing. This includes apartments, townhomes or condos. Worth noting it does not restrict new building permits if the property already has multifamily zoning.

In addition, the McDonough moratorium prevents building new hotels. The council added this provision at the 2nd renewal in February.

New Apartments in the City

Henry County has seen an increase in new apartment construction since 2019. McDonough is no exception. Building now are Crest at South Point and Arcadia at Symphony Park. Two more projects are underway behind McDonough High School. Finally, Corwyn South Point and Alta Bridges have finished construction.

Earlier this year, Henry County adopted a multifamily moratorium. The county is looking to adopt new apartment standards in response to the increased building activity. Staff presented in April a draft of the new standards. The board plans to hold a public hearing on them later this month. That meeting will be on June 20, 2023.
