The Stockbridge council has approved its first contracts with transportation SPLOST dollars. The contracts cover design services on four sidewalk projects within the city.

Henry County voters approved transportation SPLOST in November 2021. Tax collections began in April 2022. The program collected $40 million during the first calendar year, split among the county and four cities.

Stockbridge Sidewalk Design Contracts

Council approval occurred during the February 28 council meeting. They awarded each design contract to Falcon Design Consultants, a locally-based firm. The four sidewalk projects consist of the following:

  • Davidson Parkway between Clayton / Henry County line and North Henry Blvd – $70,000
  • Tye Street between North Henry Blvd and Red Oak Road – $119,500
  • Peach Drive between Jodeco Road at Campground Road and Winslow at Eagles Landing subdivision – $41,500
  • Old Atlanta Road between Mays Crossing Shopping Center and Flippen Road – $94,000

Each project plans to build a ten-foot wide concrete sidewalk limited to one side of the road. The four sidewalk design contracts will cost Stockbridge $325,000. Construction costs are to be determined at a later date.

Each design contract consists of the following phases: locate underground utilities, survey the area, prepare right of way / easement plans, develop construction documents and prepare bidding documents. Any exhibits for right of way or easement acquisition will cost $500 per exhibit to prepare. Falcon Design will also provide construction administrative services at 3% of the future construction bid costs.

An estimated schedule to complete project design was not readily available.

Project Prioritization

Stockbridge expects to receive about $30 million from transportation SPLOST. The February contracts represent the first projects to start through the program.

City council members asked staff how these four projects were first off the list. Stockbridge Public Works Director Decius Aaron responded these projects have the least required right of way. This allows the city to construct these projects sooner than some other items on the project list. Aaron added the council would begin to see more T-SPLOST agenda items in the coming months.

Some notable projects for the city include new trails, other sidewalk projects and a pedestrian bridge in downtown. The city also has a contribution towards the Rock Quarry Road widening project. Henry County is the primary project sponsor to widen Rock Quarry.
