Henry County has released a call for design proposals on three SPLOST VI road projects. This is the second round of projects to move forward. They previously sought proposals for a first round of projects in December.
Henry County voters approved SPLOST VI in the November 2024 election. Sales tax collections begin in April 2025. The program will continue through March 2031.
Second Round of SPLOST VI Road Projects
The county has released RFQs (requests for qualifications) for three road projects. They include Jodeco Road, Oak Grove Road and East Atlanta Road. Each RFQ is seeking an engineering company to design a road widening project. Interested vendors have until February 24 to respond.
After the county receives the proposals, county staff will then review each RFQ. Staff will recommend a company to the board of commissioners for their consideration to award a design contract. Design work for a major road widening project typically lasts about 2-3 years once work starts.
Jodeco Road widening
The Jodeco Road widening extends from Hudson Bridge Road to I-75. This is a distance of 2.7 miles. The design speed will be 45 mph. The project would expand the current two-lane road to a four-lane divided road. Sidewalks and / or a pedestrian path are also commonly part of these projects.
Oak Grove Road widening
Next, the Oak Grove Road widening is from Jonesboro Road to Jodeco Road, or 1.65 miles. It too contemplates widening the road to four lanes. The bridge over Walnut Creek, to either widen or replace it, will be a signature aspect on this project. The design speed is 45 mph.
The Jodeco Road and Oak Grove Road projects are two of several projects in the ”central Henry County” area. Some others include widening Jonesboro Road, Mill Road and Willow Lane. Lastly, the western parallel connector is under construction in this area. The WPC is a new four-lane road beside I-75.
East Atlanta Road widening
Lastly, the East Atlanta Road widening is in north Henry County. It extends from Fairview Road to Rex Road for about one mile. Intersection improvements at East Atlanta Road and Rex Road will also be part of this project. The East Atlanta Road project is similarly for a divided four-lane road and a 45 mph design speed.
Update on First Round of SPLOST VI Projects
The first round of SPLOST VI road projects included the following:
- Jonesboro Road widening, phase II,
- Willow Lane widening, and
- Keys Ferry Road extension.
Vendors’ proposals are due by January 31 for the above three projects. The county postponed the deadline because of the winter weather.
