Concept layout for roundabout at SR 81 and Snapping Shoals Road

Georgia DOT is presently accepting construction bids for state route 81 at Snapping Shoals Road. The project will replace the existing mini roundabout with a full-size roundabout.

The roundabout represents the first of several state DOT projects anticipated to start construction in the near future. Others will accept construction bids later this year.

SR 81 at Snapping Shoals Road

Georgia DOT is accepting construction bids for a roundabout at state route 81 and Snapping Shoals Road. The intersection is in the Ola area.

The state identified the location for improvements due to a high crash rate. Since 2015, the intersection has seen several changes. Originally a side-street stop only, the state then converted the intersection to an all-way stop. Later, the state installed a mini roundabout. Each change reduced accident rates at the location, but accidents have continued nevertheless. With design and right of way acquisition now complete for the larger roundabout, the state can proceed with construction for the long-term solution at the location.

The state will accept construction bids through Friday, May 20. Afterwards, GDOT will review the submitted bids and consider awarding a contract. The state’s award announcement typically follows in about the first week of next month.

Other GDOT Projects

Henry County has more than $500 million dollars in planned major state road projects. Several of which are on schedule to accept construction bids later this year. They include the following:

  • Widening highway 42 between Bill Gardner Parkway and Peeksville Road in Locust Grove — construction bids in July 2022
  • Widening state route 20 between I-75 and Phillips Drive in McDonough — construction bids in September
  • Resurfacing SR 138 between I-75 and the Rockdale County line — construction bids in November

Several other projects are close to construction following the completion of right of way acquisition. They include the widening of Rock Quarry Road in Stockbridge, and constructing the new western parallel connector between Hudson Bridge and Jonesboro Road.
