Industry feedback has caused Georgia DOT to change the project timeline for the I-75 truck only lanes. The new schedule better aligns with contractors’ available workforce to construct major projects, but will result in a 3.5-year delay to start construction.

Truck Lanes Project Delays

The I-75 truck only lanes project will build two northbound-only toll-free truck lanes between Macon and McDonough. Previously, the state planned to select a project contractor in the first quarter of 2023. Now, Georgia DOT anticipates contractor selection will occur in the third quarter of 2026.

As a result, estimated project completion will change from 2027 to about 2030. Visit my past article for a detailed look at the proposed project.

Present-day activities on the project include costing plans at 90% complete. In addition, right of way acquisition plans are in progress and early acquisition will soon start. Finally, environmental review and NEPA activities are advancing to align with the new procurement schedule.

North Metro Express Lanes

Other major projects across the metro area — collectively referred to as the Major Mobility Investment Program (MMIP) — will also see project delays. This consists mostly of new express lanes along I-285 and Georgia 400.

The first project to start construction will be the Georgia 400 express lanes. At this time, Georgia DOT plans to select a contractor in fall 2023. Following that, the I-285 express lanes have been broken into several segments. It is the state’s goal for each segment to be worth $1.5 billion to $2.5 billion to bid out. This will allow more contractors to bid on the work.

When complete, the I-285 express lanes will span across the northern half of the perimeter.
