Residents and motorists that commute along the I-75 corridor south of Atlanta can now view open house materials for the proposed I-75 Commercial Vehicle Lanes project between Macon and McDonough. The project extends for approximately 41 miles along I-75 North through five counties: Butts, Henry, Lamar, Monroe and Spalding Counties.
The project proposes the construction of two barrier-separated toll-free lanes for exclusive use by commercial vehicles and tractor-trailer traffic. The project supports forecast growth in freight traffic relating to the expansion of the Port of Savannah and improves safety by separating heavy truck traffic from general motorists.
Project limits are from the I-75 at I-475 interchange north of Macon to the vicinity of state route 20 in McDonough. The commercial vehicle lanes (CVLs) are expected to end near Bethlehem Road with auxiliary lanes constructed further north.
The virtual open house will be available from November 18 through December 15, 2020. A live virtual presentation and Q&A session with the state’s project team will be offered on Wednesday, December 2, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. On the day of the event, information and details on how to access the web platform will be posted on the Georgia DOT webpage.
The public comment period about the project closes on December 15. Georgia DOT will provide a response and a summary of the comments received approximately sixty days after the close of the open house. Submit your comments online.
Printed copies of the concept layout are available for viewing at the two locations listed below. The displays will be available on weekdays through December 15, from 9 am to 4 pm. The displays are not staffed.

The CVLs project is estimated to start construction in the third quarter of 2024 with substantial completion in 2028. The project is part of Georgia DOT’s Major Mobility Investment Program (MMIP) consisting of major transportation projects within the Atlanta, Macon and Savannah areas.
A Closer Look at the Project
I-75 at I-475
The project begins at I-75 and I-475 north of Macon. The commercial vehicles lanes (shown in dark grey) would include a new flyover bridge from I-475 North to the outside shoulder of I-75 for tractor-trailers to access the lanes. All commercial vehicles except those destined for Rumble Road / exit 181 would be required to enter the CVLs.
Industrial development is prevalent throughout the project limits. The Meridian 75 Logistics Center located off Rumble Road is a 186-acre business park master planned to support up to 2.95 million square feet of warehousing and distribution space. Five Below was the first major tenant to locate at the development in 2019.

The commercial vehicle lanes will be constructed on the outside shoulder for most of the project length, except for approximately three miles inside the city of Forsyth. The CVLs will cross-over into the median via a flyover bridge south of state route 18 / exit 185 and transition back to the outside shoulder before Georgia 42 / exit 188.
I-75 North will be shifted to the right to accommodate the truck lanes inside the median. Building the lanes within the center median reduces the impact on developed properties and businesses in Forsyth.
