Henry County has nominated several road projects to receive federal funds. Local governments in metro Atlanta may submit projects every two years. The projects are then considered among other applicants for the limited dollars. The board approved their 2021 TIP application in November.
The transportation improvement program (TIP) is a six-year program. It must include all projects planned to receive federal funds. The Atlanta Regional Commission oversees the TIP in the metro. Locally, several widening projects are already in the TIP. The projects below represent new chances to advance road improvements.
2021 TIP Application
Henry County approved an application with six road projects. In addition, the county is seeking funds for one transit project. The road projects include the following:

The projects listed above are in order of priority. Local governments do not receive funds for every application. Rather, ARC will evaluate each request. Then, they will recommend projects to receive funds. ARC expects to share the project results during summer 2022.
The road projects include design work on four road widening projects. The design phase includes survey work and concept layout. It also prepares the project to acquire right of way. This phase typically lasts two to three years for a widening project. The county also applied for two resurfacing requests.
All federal requests require a twenty percent local match. Federal funds then cover eighty percent of costs.
Transit Request
The transit project consists of a request to start a new fixed-route local bus service. The county is applying for $1.6 million per year for three years. The funds would help assist with operating costs. Henry County will cover $400,000 annually in local funds.
Henry County is nearly complete with its transit master plan. The transit plan will recommend which local bus route the county should pursue. The plan identified up to seventeen possible local bus routes. The plan is also looking at commuter bus and other transit modes. The final plan is not yet ready, but expected soon.
