January 6 update: the meeting will be held at the Marcy Scott Media Center, located in the speedway infield. Attendees should enter the infield through the main tunnel off Speedway Boulevard and follow signage to the media center parking lot.

State representative Karen Mathiak shared with Moving Henry Forward an invitation for community members to learn more about the proposed casino and destination resort at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton. The community meeting will take place on Thursday, January 9, at 11 am at the racetrack.

AMS first pitched their casino concept to state lawmakers in October and estimate the development would create 5,000 jobs at build-out. In addition to the casino, the concept also includes a convention center, theme park, water park, hotels, and retail space.

The proposal is one of several that have been shared as the Georgia General Assembly considers placing a constitutional amendment on the ballot to legalize casino gambling. If state lawmakers – two-thirds of both chambers – can agree on the details this spring, voters could see a statewide referendum in November on the topic. If that passes, and lawmakers include Hampton among the planned sites across the state, voters would then consider a local referendum to approve allowing a casino in Henry County.

In short, before we see any casino built close to home, we, the voters of Henry County, would get to vote twice on the topic.
