Henry County first responders, public officials and members of the community gathered on Saturday, January 4, 2025 to pay tribute to former President Jimmy Carter. The funeral procession for Georgia’s former President passed through Henry County while traveling from Carter’s hometown of Plains, GA to Atlanta.
For those wishing to pay their respects in-person to the former President, Carter will lie in repose for viewing from 7 pm Saturday until 6 am on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at the Carter Center. Parking is not available. Instead, an around-the-clock shuttle is available from the King Memorial MARTA station. MARTA rail service is also operating 24/7 during this time.
President Jimmy Carter Funeral Procession
President Jimmy Carter’s funeral procession traveled on I-75 on Saturday, January 4. Members of the Henry County Fire Rescue Department and McDonough Fire Department paid tribute by flying the American flag over local overpasses. They were at Bethlehem Road in Locust Grove and Jodeco Road in Stockbridge. Henry County officials also gathered at I-75 and Jodeco Road.

Today, January 4, 2025, Henry County came together to honor the life and legacy of President Jimmy Carter as his funeral procession passed through our community.
Henry County Board of Commission Chair Carlotta Harrell, District 2 Commissioner Neat Robinson and District 4 Commissioner Michael Price joined Public Safety personnel and many Henry County residents to pay their respects, reflecting on the profound impact of the 39th President of the United States.
Henry County was humbled to participate in this historic occasion by deploying a fire engine that proudly displayed the American flag over I-75 at Jodeco Road. HCFR personnel also traveled with the procession from Plains to the Carter Center, standing in service to honor President Carter’s enduring legacy of leadership, humility and dedication to humanity.
We are grateful for the opportunity to pay tribute to a Georgia native and global humanitarian. Rest in peace, Mr. President. Your legacy will forever inspire generations to serve with integrity, compassion and courage.
In addition, McDonough Police Department officers and city officials marked the occasion from state route 20 / 81. Many from the general public lined the interstate route to pay their respects.
President Carter’s procession will travel from Atlanta to Washington DC on Tuesday, January 7. There, he will lie in state at the US Capitol on Tuesday evening, then on Wednesday. His funeral service is on Thursday, January 9. Carter will be buried beside his late wife, Rosalyn, at their home in Plains, GA.
