Butts County voted 4-1 in a called meeting on December 23 to usher in a new wave of industrial development at I-75 and Georgia 16 / exit 205. The 1,224 acre project is the largest in county history.
Commissioners rezoned 1,021 acres located at the northeast quadrant of the interchange and approved a development agreement for the project. 203 acres located in Spalding County were rezoned in October.
The project plans to build fifteen warehouses totaling 18 million square feet of industrial space. There are also plans for 800,000 square feet of commercial space on the highway 16 frontage.
Total build-out of the project is estimated over the next twenty years. The project has been estimated at one billion dollars of investment planned in Butts County.
High industrial demand prevalent along the I-75 corridor
New industrial projects are being developed throughout the I-75 corridor between Macon and Henry County. Butts County secured a new Dollar General distribution center in 2016 opening two years later to provide 500 new jobs in the area. The nearby Liberty Commerce Center is a new 840,000 sq ft building completed earlier this year.
In Monroe County, a new 715,000 square foot distribution center opened in October. Five Below now employs 200 people at the location. The facility is part of a 186 acre business park planning four buildings.
Locally, new projects are under construction on Georgia 42 in Locust Grove and Greenwood Industrial in McDonough. Other buildings have delivered to market in 2019 off King Mill Road and at the McDonough Commerce Center II.
