The request is located in city council district 4 represented by Kam Varner. Varner made a motion to deny the request seconded by Sandra Vincent. Council members voting in favor of the motion to deny the application were Varner, Vincent, and Roger Pruitt. Mayor Copeland, council members Elrod and Stewart voted against the motion. Council member Ben Pruett was absent from the meeting.
The council’s next meeting is Thursday, January 2, at 6 pm. Residents opposed to the proposed hotel are encouraged to contact council members before then.
About the Request
TGC Group of Wichita, KS is requesting a modification of zoning conditions to support construction of a new Extended Stay America hotel. The 1.79 +/- acre tract is zoned C-3 (highway commercial).
The proposal, if approved, would join an extensive roster of existing hotels both in the immediate vicinity of the subject property and the I-75 exit 218 / state route 20 area as a whole. Most recently, the city council approved Homewood Suites by Hilton in May.
The applicant, Brad Heiman of TGC Group, stated their projected price point would be $80 per night. The adjacent Hampton Inn and Tru by Hilton average $100 – $110 per night.
In July, the Henry County Board of Commissioners rejected a similar request from the same applicants to build an Extended Stay America hotel off Jonesboro Road.
Woodspring Suites under construction across the interstate.
Woodspring Suites, another extended stay hotel brand, is under construction off Industrial Blvd. The company has twelve locations in Georgia, most recently opening in Conyers. They have also broken ground on a location in Newnan.
Existing locations in the state average $42 per night for a week in January. Nightly rates range between $26 and $55.
