A new rezoning request at 231 Avalon Court in McDonough plans to build a Homewood Suites by Hilton hotel in the I-75 exit 218 area. The McDonough city council approved the request in May 2019.
The applicant, Al Patel, requested to rezone 3.59 +/- acres from C-2 (central commercial) and C-3 (highway commercial) to C-3 with new conditions. The property was previously rezoned in 2005 and 2007.
According to the brand’s website, “Homewood Suites offers extended stay hotel suites, perfect for your next business or leisure trip.” Rooms include spacious suites and full size kitchens. If constructed, McDonough will be the brand’s second Atlanta location south of I-20. Existing hotels may be found near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in East Point, midtown Atlanta, and north metro communities.
During the project’s initial workshop review on March 12, McDonough Community Development Director Rodney Heard commented this could be the last new hotel built at South Point for five to ten years following what’s been strong build-up of new development. The Tru by Hilton opened in 2017 following by two new additions in 2018, Candlewood Suites and Residence Inn by Marriott. Mr. Heard stated discussions are ongoing to consider renovations at the older hotels found on the east side of I-75.
Avalon Court is the location of two existing hotels, Hampton Inn and Tru by Hilton. The McDonough City Council approved new interstate signage for those properties in December 2018.
