Two former members elected to Hampton city council

An effort that some supporters phrased as “putting the band back together” paid off this week as Hampton voters elected two former council members back on the city council. Over 1,200 Hampton residents cast their ballots in the election.

Hampton, like most cities in Henry County, utilizes an at-large format where all council members represent the entire city. Voters were asked to select three candidates on their ballot with the top three vote getters winning a seat.

Incumbent Henry Byrd received the most votes with 661, or 19.51%. Byrd was followed by former council members Martin Meeks (648 votes; 19.13%) and Mary Ann Mitcham (545 votes; 16.09%) to round out the top three.

Finishing in fourth, with 466 votes, was incumbent Ann Tarpley. The next two finishers were Sherry Ann Chaney (442 votes) and Dexter Cladd (401 votes).

The remaining candidates, Monica Davis and Adrian Stroud, finished with 115 votes and 105 votes respectively.

In the other ballot question, Hampton voters approved Sunday brunch alcohol sales 64.28% yes to 35.72% no.
