The city of Hampton will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, October 8, at 6 pm to accept comments from residents about the city’s upcoming FY 2020 budget. Meetings are held at Hampton city hall on E Main Street.
Following the 6 o’clock public hearing, the council’s 6:30 pm regular business meeting will include the first read of the proposed budget.
The proposed FY 2020 budget totals a general fund equaling $4,035,073. This is a decrease of nearly a half million dollars from the FY 2019 budget. The city’s primary source of revenues is through local option sales tax (LOST) collections.
The largest departmental budget is for Hampton police, with anticipated FY 2020 expenditures of $1,582,348. The department has nineteen full-time employees.
The proposed budget includes:
- eliminating the sewer surcharge, saving Hampton water and sewer customers approximately $450,000 annually.
- bringing planning & zoning services in-house, currently performed by Henry County staff, so that city residents may qualify for a small rollback on county property taxes in future years (equivalent to 0.006 mills in 2019). This will be accomplished by hiring a community development director.
- hiring an IT manager to create an IT department within the city.
- funding an increase of 15% in employee health benefits and allowing for up to a three percent cost of living increase if the council so chooses.
