The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has approved the location and design of Project #0013363 for Henry and Newton Counties, a project that would replace the bridge spanning the South River on Georgia 81. The design and location were approved on March 11, 2019.
The project is located within Congressional Districts 4 and 10, Land District 8, and Land Lots 57 and 58. The South River demarcates the county line.
The project proposes to replace the existing bridge with a new bridge on the same alignment. The new bridge will be designed to meet current loading standards and will be wider than the existing bridge with two 12-foot travel lanes and 8-foot shoulders as per Georgia DOT design policy. The bridge would be closed for construction for approximately 12 months and an off-site detour would be in effect during this time. The detour route would utilize Georgia 212 and Georgia 20 and would be approximately 1.9 miles longer from the intersection of Georgia 212/Georgia 81 to the City of McDonough.
Georgia DOT will discuss this project and others like it at an upcoming town hall meeting on Wednesday, May 8, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. The meeting, to be held at the Henry County Administration Building on Henry Parkway in McDonough, will discuss state-funded transportation improvements that are either under construction or in pre-construction stages throughout Henry County. Residents are encouraged to attend.
