Georgia DOT approved a build contract for the state route 138 at East Fairview Road roundabout. The project is located in southwest Rockdale County.
In December, the state approved another contract at highway 138 and Union Church Road. The two projects are in close proximity.
East Fairview Road Roundabout
The intersection of state route 138 at East Fairview Road operates as a four-way stop. There were thirty-nine reported crashes between 2013–2017, and one fatality in 2010. Motorists from east Henry County can pass through East Fairview when going to Conyers. An elementary school and middle school are also nearby.
Georgia DOT began design work looking how best to improve the intersection in 2010. The Covington News reported in 2013 the state’s intent to build a roundabout. A roundabout feasibility study confirmed this in 2017. Right of way acquisition then followed in 2021.
The new roundabout will be a one-lane modern design. The ellipse measures 240’ x 160’. Pedestrian improvements and lighting are also part of the project. Construction is estimated to require 12–18 months.
The state accepted construction bids for the project in January 2023. Peach State Construction Co., LLC of Eatonton, GA submitted the low bid of five vendors. They will build the roundabout for $3,662,686.75. The contract completion date is October 31, 2024.
Construction typically begins 2–3 months following contract award.
