Should the I-75 truck lanes extend further north? How will they impact traffic at highway 155? These are two of the questions Henry County’s truck lanes study is seeking to answer.
The county hired Croy Engineering in September to perform the impact study. County staff anticipate the results will be available in April.
Truck Lanes Study
Georgia DOT is planning to construct two northbound-only truck only lanes along I-75. The project extends between I-475 in Macon to SR 155 in McDonough. Presently, the state estimates construction will begin in late 2026.
Henry County residents have vocalized concerns and frustrations about the proposed northern terminus. Practically daily traffic jams on I-75 start near Jonesboro Road and extend southward into McDonough. Will the truck lanes help? Many residents fear they will make the problem worse.
Croy Engineering was asked to consider these objectives for the study:
- How will the I-75 truck lanes impact traffic on highway 155? How best can the local interchange be improved?
- What are the impacts to surrounding roads near SR 155? Consider roads within a one-mile radius from the exit.
- Would traffic flow be better if the truck lanes extended further north? Perform traffic models as if the truck lanes ended at I-675.
Croy Engineering is completing the traffic impact study at a cost of $146,540. The county’s transportation planning department is paying for the study.
The transportation advisory group — a county committee — next meets in April. At such time, they will receive a presentation about the truck lanes study’s findings. The committee meets on the fourth Monday once per quarter.
