Henry County and McDonough have approved an aquatic center intergovernmental agreement. The agreement addresses permitting for the new structure.
Voters approved SPLOST V in 2019. The program includes building the county’s first aquatic center. The county is estimating the venue will open in summer 2024.
Aquatic Center Agreement
In April 2022, Henry County selected the Cotton Fields Golf Course in McDonough where to build the new aquatic center. This occurred after more than a year looking at other sites, such as Jodeco Road. At the same time, the county hired Architecture Unlimited of North Carolina to design the new venue.
The venue’s final design is estimated to be complete by spring 2023. Now, the approved aquatic center agreement between the county and McDonough will streamline construction permitting. It allows county staff to handle plan review, permitting and inspections for the project. Traditionally, city employees would oversee these aspects because the property is within city limits.
Henry County adopted the agreement during the February 7 meeting. The McDonough council approved it on January 17.
The county has not yet accepted construction bids for the project. This should occur in the next few months if the venue is to open by summer 2024. The board of commissioners will consider approving a build contract when bids are received.
The Henry County Aquatic Center has a budget of $22 million dollars. The county has spent about $1.2 million so far on design and project management.
