Henry County commissioners next meet on Tuesday morning, April 5. The morning meeting includes discussion and a possible vote whether to move the county’s aquatic center location.

Update: Commissioners approved Cotton Fields Golf Course to locate the aquatic center.

The aquatic center project is the largest line item in Henry County’s SPLOST V program. SPLOST V collections began in April 2020 and will continue until the estimated collections have been met. At present collection rates, this will occur in early 2024.

In March 2021, board members agreed to construct the venue off I-75 and Jodeco Road. Specifically, the aquatic center would be part of the Bridges at Jodeco development. Since then, the county and developer have not been able to finalize an agreement to donate land for the venue.

Now, board members will consider voting to relocate the project to Cotton Fields golf course in McDonough. The county-owned property is off Industrial Blvd located between two interstate exits. Staff first presented the Cotton Fields concept to the board in September 2021, but no vote took place.

If the board selects Cotton Fields for the aquatic center, then the project will also include reconfiguring the existing golf course to be an executive or “par 3” course. This would allow the golf course to remain open in addition to the new aquatic center.

Also on the Tuesday agenda is consideration to award a design contract for the aquatic center. The county held a request for proposals (RFP) last year to select a design firm. The highest-scoring vendor was Architecture Unlimited of Mathews, NC. The cost proposal equates to $1.1 million.

The overall aquatic center project budget is $22 million dollars. Design work and project construction will require an estimated two to three years to complete the project.
