In July 2024, the Stockbridge council completed a lottery process to award two additional liquor store licenses in the city. The lottery was based on the city’s additional population following the 2023 annexation.

The new liquor stores propose to build on Rock Quarry Road, near SR 138, and Jodeco Road. They will join four existing stores within the city.

Stockbridge Liquor Stores Lottery 2024

The city of Stockbridge code permits three liquor stores for the first 20,000 residents, then one additional store per five-thousand residents. Fractions of 5,000 residents do not count. This type of population-based ratio is common for cities to adopt when permitting liquor stores.

At the time of the 2020 Census, the city population was 28,973. Following its legislative annexation in January 2023, the city population increased 6,700 residents. It is now a little more than 35,000. Based on their ratio for liquor stores, there may be six in total. This is based on the first three licenses at 20,000 residents, then a subsequent license each at 25, 30 and 35 thousand.

The city had to conduct a lottery to award the two additional licenses. Stockbridge accepted lottery applications between April to June 2024. They received 12 applications during this time. Applicants had to propose new stores within one of five areas:

  • Mount Zion Parkway and Highway 138 lying west of I-75,
  • Highway 138 and North Henry Parkway lying east of I-75,
  • Eagles Landing Parkway / Hudson Bridge Road from Highway 42 to the west city limits line,
  • Rock Quarry Road, and
  • Jodeco Road.

In addition, all locations had to meet the state requirements for distance separation away from churches and schools. This requirement is at least 100 yards away from a church, and 200 yards away from a school.

Lottery Results

The city staff shared the lottery results at the July 30 council meeting. From the twelve applicants, the selected lottery winners were applicant #1, Girishkumar Patel, and applicant #5, Niral Patel. They propose to construct liquor stores at 106 Rock Quarry Road, near SR 138, and Jodeco Road at Campground Road, respectively.

The new locations will join the city’s four existing liquor stores. They are located on Highway 138 West, North Henry Blvd, Hudson Bridge Road and Eagles Landing Parkway.

The selected applicants may now proceed forward with business & license permitting requirements for the two new stores.
