
Interstate 75 in Henry County remains one of the worst spots for truck congestion, according to the 2024 rankings. The location is the nation’s 16th-worst freight bottleneck, an improvement from last year. McDonough ranked 13th-worst in 2023.
The American Transportation Research Institute compiles the annual Top 100 list. They look at truck GPS data to determine their ranking.
Henry County Truck Congestion 2024
The ATRI reviews over 325 locations when determining their top 100 list. They have been studying truck GPS data since 2002. MHF News started reporting on the list in 2020. During that time, McDonough’s ranking has settled into the mid-teens.
In 2020, I-75 in McDonough ranked 62nd-worst. It subsequently changed to 31st-worst in 2021 then rose again to 12th-worst in 2022. Last year, McDonough improved to 13th. Now, it ranks 16th-worst in the nation.
Although the ranking has marginally improved, the average speeds have declined. From 2022 to 2023, there was a 0.4% decline in average speed. By comparison, there was a 3.8% decline in average speeds nationwide.
Last year, the average speed was 46.8 mph. The peak hour average speed was 42.6 mph, and non-peak hour speeds averaged 48.5 mph. In 2022, these values were 47.0, 42.8 and 48.7 mph, respectively.
I-75 at I-675
Further north, I-75 at I-675 saw a big change in its position on the list. The Stockbridge junction ranks 92nd-worst for 2024. The interchange was 57th one year ago and 52nd in 2022. It saw a 1.1% improvement in average speed from ’22 to ’23. The average speed was 49.9 mph.
Georgia Freight Bottlenecks
Georgia has nine locations on the 2024 rankings. This number is the second-most in the country, behind Texas. The state likewise had nine spots in last year’s list. They are as follows:
- #5: I-285 at I-85 (Spaghetti Junction) [4th last year]
- #6: I-20 at I-285 (West) [5th one year ago]
- #9: I-285 at GA 400 [14th]
- #12: I-75 at I-285 (Cobb Cloverleaf) [18th]
- #16: I-75 at McDonough [13th]
- #21: I-20 at I-285 (East) [17th]
- #35: I-20 at I-75/85 (Downtown) [35th]
- #72: I-75 at I-85 (Midtown) [60th]
- #92: I-75 at I-675 (Stockbridge) [57th]
No Georgia locations fell out of the top 100.
