Here are the SPLOST V Projects Under Construction Now

Henry County voters approved the SPLOST V program in November 2019. The sales tax collections began in April 2020. Here’s a look at the projects presently under construction as of July 2023.

Right now, there are four road projects under construction. The county approved construction bids for two more projects this spring.

SPLOST V Projects Under Construction

The largest job site under construction right now is paving Peeksville Road. The dirt road project extends between Old Jackson Road and the Tussahaw Reservoir. Present work includes storm drain installation and piping. The construction cost equals nearly $3.7 million. Work should be complete by the end of 2023.

Secondly, a new sidewalk and entrance are under construction at North Ola Park. Paving for the new entryway occurred this month. The work is costing close to one million dollars. The project should be complete this fall.

Next, construction continues on Racetrack Road at Iris Lake in McDonough. The intersection improvement project is building a new roundabout. Construction costs were $1.5 million. It likewise is on pace for a late 2023 completion.

Also underway is the county’s 2022 resurfacing contract. The contract, valued at about $25 million dollars, covered forty-two miles of road work. It will be complete by September 2023.

Coming up soon contractors will be beginning work on two additional projects. Projects include paving Selfridge Road in Hampton and building a new roundabout. The new roundabout will be at Bridges Road and Willow Lane in McDonough. Both projects have about one-year build times.

On the Horizon

A number of SPLOST V projects are in either design or right of way acquisition. Henry County anticipates several projects will advance to construction within the next 6–12 months. They include the following:

  • Rock Quarry Road widening, a joint project between Henry County SPLOST, T-SPLOST and Georgia DOT, estimated construction bids this fall.
  • Dutchtown Road dirt road paving, between Jonesboro Road and Mt. Carmel Road, estimated construction bids in late fall.
  • Flippen Road extension, to connect Flippen Road with Dutchtown Schools and Jonesboro Road, estimated construction bids before year end.
  • McDonough Parkway extension, to connect highways 42 and 155, estimated construction bids before year end.

In addition, the county is acquiring right of way for various projects. They are as follows:

  • Airline Road at McGarity Road,
  • East Lake Road at Airline Road,
  • Burg Road dirt road paving,
  • Knight Drive dirt road paving, and
  • the Western Parallel Connector, a new four-lane roadway next to I-75.

Construction for these projects could begin in 2024.

Parks & Recreation Projects

Right now, the county has two parks & recreation projects out for bid. Both are part of SPLOST V. They are the new Henry County Aquatic Center and Mt. Carmel Recreation Center. Contractors’ proposals are due to the county in mid-August. County staff will review the proposals they receive before recommending a contract for board approval. Once the county hires a contractor, each project has a 1-2 year construction timeframe.

A renovation of Mickie D. Cochran Park in Stockbridge is under construction. It will be complete this fall.

Complete SPLOST V Projects

Some SPLOST V projects are complete. They include the South Ola Road extension, SR 20 at Turner Church Road, SR 155 at Greenwood Industrial and West Village Parkway widening. The county also resurfaced Jonesboro Road with the assistance of federal funds.

In addition, a couple parks projects are complete. They were the new event pavilion at Nash Farm Park and Village United soccer / lacrosse park. Finally, the county completed a fitness room addition at Heritage Senior Center.
