Georgia DOT approved on April 25 the concept report to widen SR 155. The report represents one step closer to the future widening project.
The state route 155 widening project extends between I-75 and US 23 / SR 42. Construction is projected to start in 2027.
Widening SR 155
Georgia DOT began design work in 2016 to widen SR 155. This came after state lawmakers passed house bill 170 in 2015. HB 170 raised the state gas tax providing new funds for road projects. The state route 155 widening is funded entirely by the additional funding.
Georgia DOT held a public open house in late 2022 to present the concept layout to the general public. The project will widen the road from the existing two lanes to a four-lane divided highway. It will also replace and raise the bridge over the Norfolk Southern railroad. Finally, the plans call for a new roundabout at SR 155 and Henry Parkway. Haven’t seen the layout? Take a look.
Seventy-five residents responded to GDOT during the open house. Most were in support of the future project. The state DOT responded to the comments earlier this year.
Following the concept report approval, GDOT will continue to progress through remaining final design work. When the state is satisfied the project design is complete, they will issue the location & design approval. Following L&D approval, right of way acquisition can begin.
The project must buy right of way from 48 parcels. Georgia DOT expects to begin buying right of way in 2024. Estimated right of way costs are $6.7 million.
Finally, the state’s construction money is in fiscal year 2027. The latest construction cost estimate is $42.7 million. Construction will last an estimated 2.5 years. The project could then be complete by the beginning of 2030.
Total project costs are estimated at $60.4 million dollars. The full concept report is available to view on the state website (PDF link – 356 pages).
