Progress continues on the renovations at Mickie D Cochran Park. In recent weeks, the county approved purchases for the new playground equipment and path lighting.

SPLOST V funds are paying for the work. The project is a complete rebuild of the park. The estimated completion is this fall.

Mickie D Cochran Playground

GameTime of Longwood, FL will furnish the new playground. It will cost the county $212,798.86. The new playground will have a poured rubber surface and shade structure covering it. The cost includes installation. There is also a three-year warranty. Board approval came at the April 2023 meeting.

The playground will compliment other uses at the park, such as a football field and basketball courts. The football field will have a scorekeepers’ area and concession stand beside it. J.R. Bowman Construction of McDonough is the contractor for the project.

Path Lighting

Finally, the board approved a lighting agreement with Georgia Power. The agreement covers parking lot lighting and the walking path lighting. The installation cost totals $115,546.00. The cost covers installation of new light poles as well as upkeep. It also covers a pre-payment for energy costs.

The parking lot will have three 30’ high light poles, with two light fixtures per pole. In addition, Georgia Power will install 27 path lights along the walking path. The path lights will be 14” tall.

Henry County approved the lighting agreement in May. The county previously approved the purchase of sports field lighting at a cost of $74 thousand. The board approved the new sports field lighting in March.
